A significant part of the population in AJK and Pakistan lives in poverty, with orphans among the most vulnerable. Together with our donors and the governments of AJK and Pakistan, we aim to provide orphans and underprivileged children with education and technology.
We are a non-profit organisation with an ambitious concept to improve the poverty situation in Kashmir, to offer health care and schooling to kids, and to offer clean, reliable, and sustainable water to areas of Pakistan & Kashmir.
Our efforts are driven by sincerity to God and the need to fulfil our obligations to humanity. Our work is founded on fulfilling the rights of the poor and vulnerable regardless of their colour, caste, or creed. We uphold our duty of the trust people place in us as a charity to be transparent and accountable.

Are there any specific Islamic charity organizations for orphans?
KORT is indeed one of the leading Islamic charity organizations dedicated to orphans, alongside others like Islamic Relief, Muslim Aid, Islamic Help, and Orphans in Need that provide comprehensive care, education, and development programs based on Islamic principles of compassion and responsibility toward orphaned children.
What is zakat and how does it relate to charity?
Zakat is an obligatory annual contribution of 2.5% of qualifying wealth in Islam. It relates to charity as a divinely prescribed system that directs funds to specific categories of people in need, including orphans, with strict guidelines for collection and distribution according to Islamic principles.
What is the importance of charity in Islam?
In Islam, charity (sadaqah) holds central importance as an act of worship, a means of purifying wealth, and a spiritual obligation. The Quran and Hadith emphasize giving to those in need as a way to gain Allah's pleasure, express gratitude for His blessings, and fulfill one's responsibility to the community. Charity in Islam is considered both a social duty that reduces inequality and a spiritual practice that increases one's rewards in the hereafter.
How do orphan charities provide education to orphans?
Orphan charities provide education through establishing on-site schools, paying for enrollment in local institutions, offering tutoring programs, providing educational materials, and creating vocational training opportunities. KORT specifically maintains its own educational buildings where orphans receive quality instruction in both academic and religious subjects, ensuring consistent educational access within a supportive environment tailored to their unique needs.
How does Islamic charity help alleviate poverty?
Islamic charity helps alleviate poverty through systematic wealth redistribution mechanisms like Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf that direct resources from the wealthy to the disadvantaged. Organizations like KORT implement these principles through sustainable development projects, emergency relief, education funding, healthcare access, and economic empowerment initiatives that address both immediate needs and root causes of poverty while fulfilling religious obligations.
What is the role of charity in Islamic community development?
Islamic charity plays a crucial role in community development by funding essential infrastructure like schools, hospitals, and housing projects. Through organizations like KORT, charitable giving strengthens social bonds, provides safety nets for vulnerable populations, creates educational and economic opportunities, and fosters self-sufficiency in communities. This systematic redistribution of wealth according to Islamic principles builds stronger, more resilient communities while fulfilling religious obligations of care and compassion.
What types of volunteering opportunities exist for orphans?
Volunteering opportunities for orphans include mentoring, tutoring, skill-sharing, event organizing, and administrative support. The Muskorteer role at KORT offers a structured program where volunteers commit to regular engagement with children through educational assistance, organizing recreational activities, and providing consistent emotional support. Other options include professional services (healthcare, counseling), facilities maintenance, fundraising assistance, holiday celebrations coordination, and remote support through virtual tutoring or social media management.
How can I support Islamic orphan charities?
You can support Islamic orphan charities like KORT through financial donations (Zakat, Sadaqah, or sponsorships), volunteering as a Muskorteer, contributing to specific projects like the KORT hospital, donating supplies, or raising awareness in your community. Every contribution helps provide essential care to orphaned children while fulfilling Islamic principles of charity.
What is the significance of zakat in orphans welfare?
Zakat plays a vital role in orphan welfare as Islam specifically designates orphans as legitimate recipients. KORT and similar organizations use these mandatory charitable contributions to provide orphans with shelter, education, healthcare, and daily necessities, creating sustainable support systems that fulfill religious obligations while transforming vulnerable children's lives.
How do Islamic charities prioritise orphan education?
Islamic charities like KORT prioritize orphan education by establishing dedicated schools, providing educational materials, hiring qualified teachers, integrating religious and secular education, creating scholarship programs, offering vocational training, and developing individualized learning support—all based on Islamic teachings that emphasize education as essential for breaking cycles of poverty and enabling orphans to achieve self-sufficiency and dignity.
What community projects support orphans in Islamic contexts?
Islamic community projects supporting orphans include KORT's dedicated educational facilities, mosque-based sponsorship programs, Ramadan and Eid initiatives, widow housing to keep families intact, vocational training centers, healthcare services, community kitchen programs, income-generating projects, emergency relief operations, and water and sanitation improvements—all functioning within Islamic principles of collective responsibility for vulnerable children.
How can volunteers impact the lives of orphans?
Volunteers, especially as Muskorteers at KORT, impact orphans' lives by providing consistent emotional support, educational assistance, mentorship, and positive role models. They help develop children's self-esteem, social skills, and sense of belonging while bringing diverse skills and resources that enhance orphanages' capacity to provide comprehensive care beyond what paid staff alone can offer.
What organizations focus on Islamic charity for orphans?
KORT (Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust) leads Islamic orphan charities alongside other organizations like Islamic Relief, Muslim Hands, Orphans in Need, Muslim Aid, Human Appeal, Penny Appeal, Al-Khair Foundation, and Ummah Welfare Trust—all implementing Islamic principles of orphan care through comprehensive support programs funded by Zakat and Sadaqah.
What legal frameworks support orphan charities in Islam?
Islamic orphan charities like KORT operate within dual legal frameworks: national charity regulations that govern registration, financial oversight and child protection, alongside Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) that establishes specific rules for zakat distribution, waqf (endowment) management, inheritance provisions for orphans, and guardianship responsibilities. These complementary systems ensure both legal compliance in their operating countries and adherence to Islamic principles of orphan welfare and financial transparency.
How do Islamic charities assess poverty alleviation effectiveness?
Islamic charities like KORT assess poverty alleviation effectiveness through measuring quantifiable outcomes (number of orphans supported, educational achievements, health improvements), conducting regular program evaluations, tracking zakat distribution compliance, gathering beneficiary feedback, analyzing sustainable impact indicators, performing cost-benefit analyses, and using Islamic principles of accountability and transparency as standards for measuring both material improvements and spiritual benefits.
